Scores Used to Calculate Handicaps -

If a player's scoring record contains 20 or more scores, the best 10 of the most recent 20 scores are used to calculate the Handicap Index. The other 10 are simply discarded and have absolutely no effect on your handicap - so if you have a REALLY bad day, take solace in the fact it won’t hurt your handicap at all. You must post a minimum of 5 scores before a Handicap Index is issued. If you have fewer than 20 rounds posted, the following table shows how many are used in your handicap calculation:

Total Scores Scored Used
5 or 6 Lowest 1
7 or 8 Lowest 2
9 or 10 Lowest 3
11 or 12 Lowest 4
13 or 14 Lowest 5
15 or 16 Lowest 6
17 Lowest 7
18 Lowest 8
19 Lowest 9
20 Lowest 10

Handicap Indexes and Course Handicaps
    • Handicaps are posted as two numbers, a Handicap Index and a Course Handicap. The Handicap Index is a measurement of a player’s potential ability on a course of standard playing difficulty. It is expressed as a number taken to one decimal place.
    • A Course Handicap is the number of handicap strokes a player receives from a specific set of tees at the course being played to adjust his scoring ability to the level of scratch or 0-handicap golfer. A Course Handicap is determined by applying the player’s USGA Handicap Index to a Course Handicap Table or Course Handicap Formula. A player’s Course Handicap is expressed as a whole number of strokes. So if your handicap is posted as 12.9 / 14 it means that your handicap index is 12.9 and when you play Sheridan's White Tees (which have a slope rating of 119) you get 14 handicap strokes. The number of handicap strokes you receive may vary by course depending on the slope rating of the course you play.
